Since the 2003-04 school year the Knappa Fire District has partnered with Knappa High School and provided support for a fire science class at Knappa High. The fire science class evolved from the overwhelming interest the school and fire district received when they offered a short one-day class in the spring for several years. This yearlong class, taught by Vollunteer/Liutenatnt and social studies teacher Kurt Donaldson, provides high school students with and introduction and basic training in several aspects of the fire service.
In the 2004-05 school year students received instruction in a variety of firefighting disciplines and subjects ranging from ICS to ropes and knots to fire streams. The fire science class continues still at Knappa High and has recently began to use off campus facilities such as the Clatsop Community College MERT center for it’s instruction.
